Explain to them that you were quoted XYZ dollars over the phone and you are going to make out the check BEFORE they start. This is the best way to try and prevent them from charging you more for any number of reasons. But do be aware that a lot of workers that show up to your home are often paid on what they can “sell” once they get to your home so they have a HUGE incentive to try and get more money out of you.
